Modaks are known to be a Ganesh Chaturthi speciality and made especially during this time.Р”Р„long with this, many pandals are also decorated with flowers and lights to mark the beginning of this auspicious festival. These modaks are made up of rice flour or sometimes even refined flour and filled with dry fruits, nuts, coconut and jaggery. Modaks, known as Lord GaneshaРІР‚в„ўs favourite sweet food are offered to him. The preparation for the same starts atleast three months prior to the actual date of the festival. Many life like clay idols of Lord Ganesha are created across the country. The devas needed help in the form of Lord Ganesha, who is till date believed to be the obstacle averter. This was because the devas had requested them that they needed an obstacle creator in the path of the demons. It was only after Shiva and the devas who went in search for Lord GaneshaРІР‚в„ўs head could only find a headless elephants head which they placed on Lord GaneshaРІР‚в„ўs body and this led to the birth of the elephant god.Р”Р„nother theory is that Lord Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati and God Shiva. Due to this Goddess Parvati was enraged with Shiva. This led to an angry Shiva beheading him. Lord Ganesha is believed to have not allowed even God Shiva from entering as he did not who he was. The first and the most famous one is where Goddess Parvati used the dirt of her body to create little lord Ganesha to guard the door while she was bathing. History provides us with two theories of Lord GaneshaРІР‚в„ўs birth. People keep the idol on an elevated surface in their homes for ten days and the celebration is marked by different poojas everyday. The festival ends on the 10th day with the visarjan, which believes that this is time Lord Ganesha returns to Mount Kailash to meet his parents Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. This festival is celebrated according to the dates in the Hindu-Luni solar calendar and hence falls on the fourth day of Bhadrapada, the month of this Hindu-Luni solar calendar. One of the biggest festivals in the Hindu calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with much pomp and show in the southern part of the country.
